1st Workshop on Complex Systems in Social and Natural Science

1st Workshop on Complex Systems in Social and Natural Science

Introduction

The workshop on "Complex Systems in Social and Natural Science (SCCNS) '04, was held in Punta Ballena, Uruguay, since 12th to 14th December 2004.

It was organized by researchers of the Biomathematics Institute (DBM) and the Physics Institute (IF), both form the "Facultad de Ciencias" of the "Universidad de la República", Uruguay, and the Physics Institute of the "Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul" (IF-UFRGS) and the Physics Institute of the "Universidade Federal do Rio de Janerio" (IF-UFRJ).
The goal of the workshop, was organizing a meeting of a small group of researchers, in interdisciplinary fields, commited to the study of complex systems in several fields, like biology, physics, ingeneering, economy and social science, and to promote the sharing of ideas between such different scientific fields. This workshop, also looked for helping new interdisciplinary projects, and contributions, searching for understanding common isues, that arise in social and natural systems.

Some of the topics were:

  • Mathematical biology: Physiology, Ecology and Gentics.
  • Socio and Econo Phycis.
  • Statistical Physics of Complex Systems.
  • Condensed Matter.

Contents

We had seven lectures and one poster:

  • Daniel Ariosa (Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Institut de Physique de la Matière Complexe, Lausanne, Switzerland)(ppt).
  • Ruben Budelli (Instituto de Biología, Facultad de Ciencias Univ. de la República)(ppt).
  • Raúl Donangelo (Instituto de Física, Universidade Federal de Rio de Janeiro, Brasil)(pdf)
  • Hugo Fort (Instituto de Física, Facultad de Ciencias Univ. de la República), Game Theory Applied to Complex Systems from Biology and Social Sciences (ppt).
  • Alex Hansen (Department of Physics, NTNU, Trondheim, Noruega) Blackouts in the Scandinavian Power Grid (ppt).
  • Roberto Iglesias (Instituto de Física, UFRGS, Porto Alegre, Brasil)
  • Kim Sneppen (NORDITA, Denmark)(pdf)
  • Alfonso Pérez (Instituto de Física, Facultad de Ciencias Univ. de la República)(ppt).

Social environment

The workshop also had time to enjoy the natural surroundings of Casapueblo, that promoted the creation of a relaxed atmosphere, in which there were frequent informal conversations about the workshop topics.

Organization

The organizg committee was integrated by:

  • Ruben Budelli (DMB-FC-UdelaR)
  • Raúl Donangelo (UFRJ)
  • Hugo Fort (IF-FC-UdelaR)
  • José Roberto Iglesias (UFRGS)

Acknowledgments:

We would like to thank the support of "Pedeciba, área física", and the colaboration of Mario Rodríguez y Pablo Alonso, from Casapueblo.
